The celeb thing...Another thing that happens to me is that I just don't have a clue so I am always like "Hi there, so what do you do?" This happened w/my neighbor (& others) who is a Tony nominated dancer/actress on Broadway. I mean not that you're required to know who they are or anything but I am certainly notorious

You are right, which is why I don't debate the meaning of racism with people. I think that when you start arguing about that your capacity for critical thinking about the issue is obvious. I also think that people often misunderstand and think that you have to agree with the victimized group, I don't believe that. But

Well, this

Well, I was being cheeky. Because it would *totally* be malicious. Blackface is inherently malicious, though people don't see that it can't be fun. It just can't. That would be the point, to give a taste of that very bitter medicine. Anyway, I was also joking. I would never do this because:

That's hilarious. Did you approach her like "Hey, Ms. Johnson, it's so great to see you..."

***ooh their not they're. ugh.

So this happens to me all the time and more now living in NYC. So, Adina Porter, who I don't know well, having only seen a handful of True Blood episodes, she was sitting directly across from me last night on the train. I kept looking at her, mostly b/c it couldn't be avoided, thinking 'God, I know her, but from

Oh god, you gave me flashbacks with that description.

Fantastic! I have to start doing that in real life!!

I kind of did! They were so bitter.

Yes. It really is a terrible place. Shockingly so for the kind of money they are charging. It's probably the most ridiculous place I've shopped in the city (I'm kind of new) and the general lack of customer service in NYC has been pretty amazing, but Harry's Shoes definitely takes the cake.

Girl! Amen to every last word of that.

This is so real. I experienced this even in a cookware store where the scrubbiest looking couple dropped an insane amount of money on copper cookware pieces. No one would work with them and I ended up helping. They even gave me a tip. Even before that I never judged anyone like that, though.

This has happened to me at Harry's Shoes on the upper west side in NYC. Everyone kept ignoring me presumably b/c I am black, tall, w/a whole lotta afro and at the time was wearing leggings as part of some not-so-snazzy ensemble. I kept approaching people who would look away or had generally dismissive attitudes until

Right?! This is so exasperating.

????

The first part of your question yes as long as they don't slather brown foundation/black shoe polish all over their faces. In the case of Mulan, again sure, but no fake buck teeth or taped eyelids and funny accent to "match." If someone can't tell who/what you are without those extras, it's a shitty costume. But

Exploitation, sexual and otherwise.

"...it's funny because HE LOOKED LIKE AN AARDVARK"

Yeah. Try again after you get up on some Aboriginal history and their treatment in Australia.
