That’s a good point. Bojack is being nice because it does no harm, and because being cruel would do no good. It’s time to try and move past everything. The time to tell her to what a horrible person she is was probably decades ago, if ever.
I think Bojack showing kindness was meant to convey several things, while not excusing what she did to him Bea had never really been shown kindness in her life and all her comfort was at the expense of a very emotionally abusive household. Given what has happened in all the previous episode 11 we are expecting Bojack…
I liked how they had a segment from Horsin’ Around right before that explaining how genetic testing is an imperfect science.
Last season Todd told Bojack he had to be better
My girlfriend, whose mom is pretty similar to Beatrice, saw that moment as less “Bojack being kind to his mother in her final days,” and more “Bojack caving in and performing for his mother thus fulfilling the role she has assigned him.” It’s an interesting take.
Frankly, this episode left me terrified that some day I might end up like that, stuck reliving every shitty moment in my life in some half-remembered fugue state. I wonder if that’s really what dementia is like.
The season had been teasing a grander view at Bea’s backstory for a while, and it was genuinely moving to see it all play out here, albeit through the warped lens of her addled mind. By the end of the episode, I felt like I understood the decisions Bea had made, the perfectly relatable reasons she’d made the mistakes…
It feels weird to watch an episode of television thinking, “I’ll be really disappointed if this doesn’t crush my soul” - but knowing that this was episode 11, I was definitely thinking it.
The biggest problem I had with it was that the bit wasn’t all that funny. Colbert’s “Melissa McCarthy, ladies and gentleman!” was probably the best part of it.

No, I was always like this.
Then her little comment “...and you’re way behind schedule.”
Guys, literally HOUSE HUNTERS.
“Jesus Christ, Rick, what are you, a boulder? A rock-person?”
“You fucked with squirrels, Morty! We got a good five minutes before they’re backin’ up in our ass, Morty! We have to pack up and move to a new reality, Morty! You know-we-I-I said we could only do that a couple of times! We’re fucked over here because of these damn squirrels, Morty!”
The purple tubes were Family fuck ups.
After failing a succession of young women, each of whom viewed him as a surrogate father figure, he thinks Hollyhock represents a fresh start. She also has eight dads, which completely absolves him of any parental responsibility. And yet, here she is in the hospital - I think he blames himself for trusting Bea, and…
