I never read the series, but there's nothing wrong with a little escapism. Not every book has to be gritty and real; sometimes you just want to spend time in a universe that's nicer than the real one.

If it makes you feel better, Steve, I am not terribly culturally literate—I've never seen My Dinner with Andre for example, and I don't follow any Community blogs—but I like the show.  I know I miss a lot watching the show, but I enjoy it anyway.
