Here’s the thing — she literally gets no time off at all when the Senate is in session. She can’t predict — hell, we can’t predict — when a vote will take place, whether it will be delayed (ahem Rand Paul), how long it will take etc. She can plan for some childcare with her husband and a nanny, but she can’t possibly

Bullshit. Part of the reason that flexibility needs to be there is because being in session, especially when legislation is being debated or voted on, requires her presence for long times, or weird, sudden hours. It matters that there be working mothers in the Senate and that having a baby shouldn’t stop a legislator

Why on earth would it be appropriate to bring a child to the Senate? I can’t bring my kids to work either because, astonishingly, when I’m at work, I’m supposed to be working.

This comment thread is depressing as fuck.

A friend of mine had repeated problems with pregnancy losses and stillbirths. A profoundly religious person, who with her husband believed this was some sort of grace from God, she had funerals for every one of them, one as early as 3 months. It’s strange, but it was every bit their right to make that choice. I lost a

Right? I’m getting some boxed wine, a frozen pizza, and some Sour Patch Kids and watching the FUCK outta this.

Those rules are that it’s not staffer’s jobs to be babysitters.

You clearly have no concept of how infants work.

I hope she breastFeeds on the Senate floor because I have pretty good idea what Mike Pence would look like with blood flowing from his ears and I’d like to confirm my suspicions.

Inject it directly into my veins.

Every working mother has to hire childcare for the first 0-12 weeks of their baby’s life?

This is straight up cruel and misogynistic. My sister in lawa lost two embryos early that were very much wanted and had to go through IVF to get pregnant which was devestating for her not to mention painful and expensive. If she was forced to go through this bullshit it would have wrecked her.

Also, note the psychological fuckery of this:

As an unfortunate card-carrying member of the Recurrent Unexplained Early Miscarriages Club, I can say with confidence that having to make this decision would break me. The only way I have survived my four losses was to know that the tissue would be examined for defects that might lead to an answer and to remember

This entire article is horrifying (I can’t even imagine having to deal with forced “burial” of a miscarriage while in the hospital undergoing a medical procedure to deal with said miscarriage) but this:

This is evil.

No, civilization is not crumbling because an angry 18-year-old can’t get a gun. I wouldn’t want my 18-year-old self to have a gun, either.

Manchin is a Democrat and the incumbent, and still fairly popular. His win would be much less surprising than Doug Jones.

There are no jobs there. People are told constantly that coal, steel, and fuel refineries are the only hopes for WV and that regulations cause the plants / mines to close. A LOT of the cities and towns in that state are built around these plants and when one closes, entire communities spiral into poverty.
Coal

No, I really don’t. There’s a limited distance they have to run. And I’m quite certain Serena Williams can hit a ball as hard as most men.
