Reminds me of the Flaming Lips (and friends) cover record of Dark Side that came out back in 2009. Didn’t get much love at the time, but it’s a fun little record that’s got a noise/krautrock feel that winds up feeling more in the exploratory/fun spirit that the original LP has than most tributes to Floyd I’ve seen.

As of now Willard’s been added (#32), but I’m not seeing Pop Smoke, who was straight up murdered before the pandemic shit even hit the fan. But mark my words, that kid’s gonna be considered foundational by the next generation of greats.

Yo as a fan of both artists I’d say both albums are representative of a certain kind of career nadir (Chance has since surpassed, unfortunately). I agree that ATAN was better than Coloring Book, but its akin to a trash fire vs a dumpster fire, in that I understand there’s empirically magnitudes of stink to consider,

I get the sentiment here, but I think it’s more about the gall of a potential employer thinking it appropriate to be talking shit about an applicant *actively during their interview* like a Simon Cowell aside, regardless of if he got caught or not. And particularly the horrible optics of pitying their perceived

I’ll say one nice side effect of the Grammy’s laughable eligibility period this time around (and something unmentioned in the article) is that its enabled the late Pop Smoke’s “Dior” to be up for a competitive Grammy despite being initially released in July 2019 and his tragic death in February. Really nice to see his

Papa Jon Arbuckle’s.

No problem! And yeah, re: Wilco and Opiods, that’s a somewhat dissonant situation. But also, I have complicated feelings about chopped and screwed as a subgenre leaning (pun intended) so hard into the purp thing (ie: Yankee Purple Foxtrot), given the nature of Screw’s passing. But then again, I feel similarly if I

Haha no problem, and agreed re: Wilco here. But also ty for those recs!! Love me some Thundercat and that sounds like a great match.

Now playing

Chopped and screwed is def one of the cases where the idea of it sounds worse than it does in practice; but on the other end of the coin, bad examples of the genre just sound uninspired/lazy. If you’ve never listened to any DJ Screw originals, I’d recommend checking some out just to see the difference between the OG

While doing a cursory scan through this project, I agree with you that I’m not sure the source material is the most natural fit for twisting into this genre, which does usually take more upbeat songs and are often used as hip hop instrumentals. But it’s referred to as Houston-centric and specifically “Chopped and

As a lifelong New Yorker and former full-time journalist in NYC I also find it kinda funny that “reporter from New York” has gotten conflated into a nice elitist strawman gumbo that doesn’t necessarily get at the reality of the situation.

Sidenote: I was genuinely hoping that this list double (or triple) dipped on Peter Jackson, since both Meet the Feebles’ spider attack and King Kong’s insect pit scene go as hard ROTK.... Honestly, there might not be a working filmmaker better at surprise deploying bugs than Jackson

I understand the impetus behind this, but the take doesn’t really scan. A quick look at financial information about the industry in the census puts the Movie Theater industry at around $15-18 billion annually in revenue, with wage costs hovering around $2 billion annually. Even this year, with the approx. 70% dip
