I ran a length of chain through the number of plates I want to use, threaded it through a 7" piece of PVC pipe as my grip handle, and secured both ends of the chain with a 1" threaded-closure chain link. A good, dedicated squeegee used for nothing else, and commercial glass cleaner sprayed directly onto the glass, towel off the dashboard when done. It cannot be done perfectly but this comes suitably close.
