In my home city, the kids rode County Buses as opposed to school buses, and all of those were fitted with winter tires. Otherwise, the drivers were beasts. I do know in one very hilly city nearby (Yonkers, NY; the hills are insane), they would just cancel school if there was any ice on the ground.

Agreed. If anything, the only people sneering at anyone else are some of the arrogant team runners, the ones that aren’t quite good enough to be elites but are still fast and have an arrogance about it. The vast majority of runners are very positive and encouraging to everyone, regardless of pace.
Sadly, us uptown folk (181st and Fort Washington) need the train, particularly in the winter. But once spring comes around, bam, bike.
