I think the thing to remember is that the vast, vast base of Call of Duty players were drawn in by Modern Warfare and the ilk, where it is realistic warfare with contemporary weapons. Enemies are Russian, Chinese, etc. People who wanted Call of Duty, expect realistic (albeit gamified) weapons.
