I think it depends on where you live. In the greater Los Angeles area, many people live where they do based on a few factors: affordability, neighborhood (including schools if you have kids or plan to), and where you want to spend your weekends / time outside of work.

The key questions here are: What total percentage of DOE loans turned out to be bad ideas? What is their "batting average?" What's the total ROI (if that can be calculated yet)? How do these figures compare to those of venture capitalists?
