In most (maybe all?) jurisdictions a charge of attempted murder requires proof of specific intent to kill, whereas the aggravated assault charge doesn’t, which would make it an easier charge to get a conviction on since the defendant will likely claim that she wasn’t trying to kill the victim, but just scare him away.

This is one of those times when more information would really help clarify the situation.
