I think it’s worse than that. The Chinese government hates showing weakness. They have a potential 1 Billion people who might turn on them if there’s the feeling things are going poorly, so they tend to hide failures. Given what they are showing I think it’s ten times worse.

Dropping cars might make some sense--I really don’t see anyone returning to cars in the near future in North America--but fucking up the Explorer intro was just amazingly stupid. I understand it was a very complicated redesign but they should be very damn good at this.

There’s far more to the Ford story during that era than the product development, though. Honestly, Ford’s recovery was the result of three people: Don LeClair, Mark Fields, and Alan Mulally. Work on the recovery was underway before Mulally got there.

Mulally put in place a lot of quality control procedures that other executives chunked out the window because they were pushing for ‘here and now’ that led to the third gen Focus’s transmission problem.
