I once said that to my grandfather (a career Air Force mechanic who finished out WW 2, was deployed in Korea and got out at the start of Vietnam) and he said “this may be a shithole, but it’s still the best shithole on earth.”

Dead wrong about Mad Cow disease.
Most of those who die from influenza are already ill or otherwise weak; the very young with developing immune systems, and the very old with existing health problems. In either case neither group is participating economically before they get the flu. This coronavirus strain is not only not so picky, it’s ten to twenty…
I think it’s worse than that. The Chinese government hates showing weakness. They have a potential 1 Billion people who might turn on them if there’s the feeling things are going poorly, so they tend to hide failures. Given what they are showing I think it’s ten times worse.
And we can’t do anything about abortion, the leading cause of death in America (by far) and around the world because the Democrats and Planned Parenthood are linked together financially and philosophically.
Bullshit. If we want to talk about deaths, your sort SLAUGHTER 3000 innocent children every single DAY at your abortion mills.
All these regulations are why they’re kicking out butt! Bring back pollution and child labor, it’s the only way to make America great again!
If it were a different woman it wouldn’t be a problem, but Hillary Clinton had too much against her. That and she stayed with Bill Clinton doesn’t help either. Clinton was a ridiculously bad idea. The Email scandal and Benghazi? I don’t know how to spell it, really hurt her campaign.
Nurse here - the amount of people blowing this off is astonishing to me, I agree that news tends to sensationalize threats, but in this case I think it’s the opposite. This is a big deal
Thank you for being the only other person on this site besides myself that thinks VW is going to swallow Ford. I 100% think this is going to happen. They’ve been close buddies since Nazi-times, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they finally quite playing and got absorbed by Das Vaterland. Lord knows VW needs a…
DDT almost eradicated bedbugs. It really took them about 40 years to recover after DDT was banned.
Dropping cars might make some sense--I really don’t see anyone returning to cars in the near future in North America--but fucking up the Explorer intro was just amazingly stupid. I understand it was a very complicated redesign but they should be very damn good at this.
Third, car manufacturing jobs suck. I’ve never met a happy assembly line worker.
Agree with all your points, except to state that Tesla is definitely an American car company and they're poised to become part of the big 3 sooner or later.
There’s far more to the Ford story during that era than the product development, though. Honestly, Ford’s recovery was the result of three people: Don LeClair, Mark Fields, and Alan Mulally. Work on the recovery was underway before Mulally got there.
Mulally put in place a lot of quality control procedures that other executives chunked out the window because they were pushing for ‘here and now’ that led to the third gen Focus’s transmission problem. He got them flush with cash an not in need of a government bailout during the ‘08 crisis. He made Ford financially…
That will leave GM as the only major ‘American’ based car manufacturer, which will be the saddest commentary of all on what has happened with manufacturing in America.
I think it’s a little reactionary to say that Ford is positioning itself to sell out, they’ve made a number of significant mistakes in relation to their car business, but their truck business is still better than a lot of other manufacturers entire business and really, that’s the root cause of their problem. They…
I’m certainly no expert in the automobile industry, but I think Jim Hackett will go down in history as one of the worst CEOs Ford has ever had. I think there will be business school case studies written about him and his tenure, and not for complimentary reasons but as examples of ‘don’t let this happen to you’. The…
Fun Fact: Jim Farley is actually a first cousin of Chris Farley and lived with him for a time before he got big in comedy.
