While the others were a bit harsh, and definitely rude, I see their point: No way in hell brakes and exhaust cost more to fix than out-and-out buying a new car, which the original poster presented as though it was a fact. Not to mention, if the vehicle is failing to be maintained, that’s either due to a lack of money

why does it have to be a $300-500 a month? A $5000 Civic or Corolla at 20% is only $132 a month.

An idiot is the person who goes without asking for help or advice from a professional first. This person at least asked.

A lot of people end up being remarkably ignorant of basic parts of being an adult. They’re not necessarily idiots, they’ve just been remarkably badly prepared by their families and schools. Or they’ve come up in a very difficult situation. To just say they’re idiots assumes way too much and ignores real issues that

Same happened with my truck. 2002 with 202k on it. Everything leaked. Needed pads, rotors and at least one caliper. Needed u-joints. Needed front diff seals, axle seals, etc. Plus add in frame rot, body rot and ~11MPG and it was just time for a car rather than sink the ~$2500+ into the truck to keep it on the road for

I guess I am an idiot as I had a truck that needed 10k worth of repairs to be serviceable. There were sudden unexpected items that happened within a a couple of months - exhaust manifold cracked, steering pump rotted, transmission cooler rotted and the known items like rust, brakes needing replacing (full set

Don’t get a Buick Encore. Ever.

Wow. Imagine being so privileged as to call somebody who is obviously in a very tight financial spot an idiot. Have some fucking empathy.

Someone in a bad automotive/financial situation asking for advice from someone with lots of automotive/financial experience is an idiot?

It would be nice for places that are hard hit with contagious diseases.  I can also seeing them getting robbed on a consistent basis as well.

I’m not sure how successful these would be.

I really, really want this technology to succeed. This tech has the capability to fundamentally change how we receive our goods at home and at work. I place way more trust in this firm than I could in Uber. However, I don’t want to see any headlines like this.

My (new) 1999 Nissan Frontier came with free oil changes for life (every 3k mi) and a John Deere push lawnmower!

Nearly every car company puts a time qualifier on service intervals as well. Under the “free maintenance” for my BMW, I still got an oil change once a year even though I never got close to the max miles. So if they offer “three years”, chances are you will get three free oil changes even if the car sits in the garage

I have not had good luck with walmart auto centers. the work is fine, the timeliness of the appointment is not. I blew out a tire on my july4th vacation, made an appointment, and after driving an hour to get there, they said they couldn’t get me in until 3hr after my appointment and I wasn’t allowed to just leave the

The amount value someone can get right now for $12-14k in a used hatch is bonkers

Its 15k/12months whatever is shorter. I do agree though that 15,000mi is too much. Mobil1 is advertising that. I do 7,000mi on 2 cars and 5,000 on my wrangler. $27 for a synthetic oil change.

Now playing

Don’t want to pay for maintenance? Get an EV.

If your own time is worth $50/hr then the offer is meaningless. Order factory oil filters online and go to Walmart after work (mine will make an appointment). They’ll give you a credit for providing your own filter and offer synthetic oil at a good price. In the meantime you can get some shopping done.

You nailed it: This is the golden age of used four door sedans. I’m impressed at the number of Camrys and Accords I just turned up on Autotempest with under 20k miles, that stick around the $15k-18k range.
