I agree that there wasn’t a ton of visibility of trans issues in pop culture in 2005 when Mr. Garrison’s Fancy New Vagina aired, although they were by no means the first to explore issues of sexual and gender identity (Ru Paul had been famous for a long time by the time that episode aired, Drew’s brother on the Drew

The ability to survive for such a brief period of time in a vacuum is just something that is entirely possible, without force powers. People have internalized dramatic shortcuts from other films, and regard them as truer than reality.

Re: Poe’s arc- I appreciate completely why Holdo would not give him the data based on his action. I can not reconcile why he and Finn would then be made leaders of the Resistance after their actions here. There’s learning, and then there’s disobeying orders, committing mutiny, and getting most of your army killed. It

I’m fairly certain that RT score is gamed by the trolls. That high Episode IX score is kinda belied by the box office, which was not in any way TFA-like. The thing that puts me off TLJ criticism most (and I agree, there’s a fair bit to criticize there) is that so much of the “A TOTAL FAILURE!” stuff looks and smells

Harbour might be more concerned about being typecast as “guy in a Russian prison.”

I’ve noticed this with these cretins. They try to “prove” their points with all kinds of obsessive “facts. They care so much about box office, ratings, etc rather than... Just making a decision for themselves?

Luke initially can’t lift his X-Wing out of the Dagobah swamp because it’s too big.  Even Yoda gasps from the effort and is noticeably drained after doing it successfully.  I imagine that projecting yourself lightyears away is draining, yes.

I don’t recall the scene is Return of the Jedi where Luke decides that instead of confronting Vader and attempting to turn him he runs into the mountains and just says “fuck it” I don’t want to fight so I’ll instead just hide here while my friends and family most likely die.”

I mean, its not like space battles in Star Wars have ever approached reality.  The fighters are WW II dogfights, and the capital ships fight like 1800s era naval vessels.  Because it's more fun than ships fighting from thousands of miles apart at significant fractions of C.

I don’t dislike Leia’s spacewalk in theory, but I do in execution. It looked pretty ridiculous. She was standing stock still like she was an action figure. She should have been bending due to inertia. I know it’s dumb to say anything with the Force looks unrealistic, but it did! and it broke my immersion

We could also have guessed that using a tiny bit of telekinesis is one of the first and easiest things to do with the Force, so it’s not remarkable at all that she was able to do it in a moment of desperation.

100% agreed, and it’s true even before he’s ever revealed in The Force Awakens: Luke’s Jedi instruction was entirely from two former Jedi who had voluntarily exiled themselves after making catastrophic errors in supposed service to the Force - of course he’s going to follow in their footsteps! I never understood

Literally the only thing the movies establish about the Force is that it allows people to do things they couldn't normally do. There aren't really any rules to be broken.

It still feels like he was just like, “eh, they’ll be fine, laterz.” When they totally weren’t going to just be fine! CLONE EMPEROR! INFINITE FLEET OF STAR DESTROYERS! If only Luke had known what the insidious Darth JJ had in store.

It would be fine if he had character development after ANH (which is actually the case) and became a pacifist, but that’s not what happened. He’s just a Jedi who’s learned to be wary of the dark side of the force and doesn’t fall for it.

Oh hey, it’s this boring dickhead from the last column.

It’s like the people who quote “When everyone is special, no one will be” from ‘The Incredibles’ to suggest that Brad Bird is an Objectivist. People, he puts those words in the mouth of the psychotic, mass-murdering capitalist supervillain.

I don’t really think Abrams deserves too much shit for what happened. He was originally supposed to be done with the series after VII, so the notion of whether he liked or didn’t like Johnson’s film would have been a moot point (he certainly was never in a position to call the shots on the trilogy as a whole). Colin

“Half the battle, knowing is.”

I’ve never seen the problem with Holdo not telling Poe what was going on. Leaders don’t have to explain themselves to troops; that’s not how command structures work. Specifically, I think Holdo is trying to remind Poe that that’s not command structures work and he doesn’t get to do his own thing just because he flies
