That article is hilarious, Not only for not offering anything of substance and being published, but for assigning meaning to an author's work that said author does not necessarily agree with.

As a Thompson fan, I'd say that he doesn't belong on this list.
Sure, there are bros that have only read Fear and Loathing and think he's the tops, but even a shallow dive into his work proves him to be of far more substance than Bukowski or Kerouac.
Some of my favorite volumes of his are the collections of his letters,

Watching Dak and Zeke and the rest of that offense has been a highlight of this season for me.
And I usually dislike Dallas.

As much as I liked the show, I'm not sure how much of a selling point 'from the writers of Banshee' is.
