The game is still well populated. Some servers died out, but they started with far too many of them. This was a necessity due to the short term overpopulation of WoW players who returned to WoW shortly. I think the current population will sustain very nicely. The server Dark Crag is a constant battle.
FFXI sales on Direct2Drive are crazy.
Make the load time less than 5 seconds to get into home and less than 1 second moving between zones and MAYBE it will work.
Just get a freaking projector. I had a Sony VPL-W10 in my house for a while and the picture was as good as any LCD/Plasma I have ever seen, but with a monstrously huge picture. Cost was $3500 *with* a very nice screen.
