Abigail Disney, granddaughter of Walt’s brother and business partner Roy (an unsung hero, by the way, who kept the wolves at bay and made Walt’s experimentation possible), recently raised the issue of employee wages.

“High Society” should be one of my favorite musicals -- but I can’t watch it because I sit there thinking “Bing Crosby is not C.K. Dexter Haven -- *Cary Grant* is C.K. Dexter Haven. Grace Kelly is not Tracy Lord --” and so on. “The Philadelphia Story” is such a wonderful, wonderful movie. I still remember the woman…
It may be just fine, and there have been other, similar projects that have turned out well, but it still makes me think of an old SNL parody. Natalie Cole had, IRL, released a version of her father’s song “Unforgettable,” making it into a duet with her, and SNL had an ad for the followup album, “Unforgiveable: Natalie…
True fact: When the Sherman brothers were writing songs for “Mary Poppins,” Robert Sherman came home one day and his wife mentioned that one of their kids had gotten the polio vaccine that day at school. Robert assumed that meant an injection, and asked the child if it had hurt much, but it was the oral vaccine, which…
If you are ever in Lynchburg, Tennessee, to tour the Jack Daniel Distillery, you will want to eat at Miss Mary Bobo’s, a family-style restaurant owned by the distillery. (There really was a Miss Mary Bobo, who ran the facility as a boarding house for part of the 20th century before semi-retiring except to serve meals…
You can get in some serious trouble if you screw up the nutritional labeling on those artisanal jams and jellies.
“Welcome to heaven; here’s your harp.” / “Welcome to hell; here’s your accordion.”
Came here to say the same thing. *Insects* have a narrow definition. *Bugs* do not.
I am so fortunate to be in an area of the country where the hot mustard sauce is still an option for McNuggets.
Yes, yes, yes. Agreed 100 percent.
My uncle, who died last November, is buried in that same cemetery. I did not make it up to Louisville for the services, however. I covered a commitment for my father, his brother-in-law, so that he could go.
I have never seen any of the Billy Jack movies, but I was deeply moved by the chapter in Nick Offerman’s book “Gumption” where he writes about Tom Laughlin. Offerman saw “Billy Jack” when he was in college, and it meant a great deal to him. Later, he became friends with Laughlin’s children, who were going to introduce…
Yes, yes, yes. Store brand butter for cooking, cultured butter for spreading. I’ve been doing this about six months now (after finally springing for the good butter for the first time), and I heartily second you.
Don’t Look Deeper, directed by Catherine Hardwicke
I cannot believe that B.J. Thomas response; it wasn’t even that severe of a column, more of a dismissal than an attack. Ironically, the last thing I remember of B.J. Thomas was his Christian music phase in the late 1970s/early 1980s.
That was also how they presented the Ted Danson/Shelley Long credits on “Cheers.”
“Ruth: ‘What’s wrong with CNN?! Why do they keep replaying something this sad?!’ Good question, Ruth. Stellar question.”
I was, I admit it, a teenager in the 1970s. I actually read Arthur C. Clarke’s novelization a good while before I saw the movie, and so I had a little better idea of Clarke’s view, anyway, of what that ending was all about. In some ways, I wish I’d seen the movie first.
If you subtract the celebrity (Lebron James for “The Wall,” JT for “Spin the Wheel”), “The Wall” is from the same executive producers as “Spin The Wheel.” The shows are so similar in structure and content that if I were NBC, I would be kind of annoyed at the executive producers for marketing a copycat show to a…
