Looking forward to watching this, though I did cringe a bit at some of the showrunner’s comments in the NY Times, to the effect that they wrote whatever they wanted and then maybe looked up some history after but the real history wasn’t really a concern to them. It’s not like there’s any shortage of un- or

DeVos is shoveling money to scam schools while there are public colleges in places like Ohio and Missouri laying off entire departments—surprise, surprise, most of them being in the humanities, arts, and the social sciences. This is what the GOP wants: a system of higher education that enforces economic inequality,

After about season 4 I forgot I was even watching Empire. I’ve saved myself from spoilers in case I ever wanted to pick it up again but it hardly seems worth it now.

I had the impression it was a dud. At least, when I was in NYC a couple summers ago there were always very good seats being sold off cheap at the last minute.

I really wish they reckoned more with Eleanor. The very tone of the movement to oppose the ERA—that it’s about being “proud to be a housewife”—has sold out women like her. That scene where Phyllis disinvites her to Thanksgiving is so painful, knowing as we do that Phyllis depended on the spinster aunt (and the servants

I’d say it’s a more accurate description to say that Outlander is more like the historical romance novels of the 1970s and 1980s, which were substantively similar to this series in many ways (I can’t watch this show sometimes without feeling like DG just completely ripped off Bertrice Small’s Skye O’Malley series,

I feel like we need a Sunday social for people dealing with toxic moms/mother-in-laws. My husband’s mother has literally not called once to check in with him in the 3+ weeks since we buried his dad. Last time he spoke to her, when he was asking for details about the burial, then she accused him of trying to change

The quality of the animation & score was amazing. After re-watching the entire series leading up to this, it’s hard not to marvel at how far the series came.

Yeah, the problem is that it’s not really a personality change. I haven’t been around this long, but according to my husband some of her shenanigans about hiding the family’s money and putting it in her own name had been going on for years. Using money to control people and buy respect is one of her trademarks. When I

I’ve heard good reviews of the new Mindy Kaling series coming out on Netflix on Monday (there’s a review on AV Club now). Hoping it’s more like early years Mindy Project and less like... whatever the show became after it moved to Hulu.

Yowza. Yeah, she is his mother and the whole dynamic is... complicated. I’ll just say there is a legacy of abuse and probably mental illness that has not been properly addressed.

“Isn’t with holding medication and food illegal?”

...Also, make a damn will if you don’t want your spouse to get everything.

My father-in-law died of coronavirus last week. You may remember from a few weeks back that my mother-in-law was basically horrible to him throughout the months leading up to his illness and after he was hospitalized. She’d been putting assets in her own name and doing shady stuff with the family business for months.

I really liked the various Rebels parallels set up in this episode (esp. the Caleb Dume cameo, which was spoiled by the trailer but whatever). Maul is so thirsty for an apprentice.

There’s also the fact that the disappeared husband advised more than one person that he was getting ready to divorce her...

Yeah, I don’t really get the tone of this article. We’re meant to dislike her because... she’s a down-to-earth, middle-aged woman? I mean, she’s 55 years old. Sorry she’s not keeping up with her 30-something in laws but I think that’s to be expected.

Yes, and my MIL doesn’t realize that putting things in her own name doesn’t change that. Personally I’d love to hear a lawyer tell her that, but for 40 years they haven’t divorced because they’re “religious” (but more so because they want to keep up appearances in their community).

I cook, DH cleans. He wants new food every day and is constantly surprised that there are dishes involved.

We were lucky that we cleaned out an old rental unit on 3/15 and got someone to take the old furniture. Realistically, other than apologizing and offering to pay for removal there's not much else you can do. It's shitty for someone to get on you for that.
