Trailer is awesome, but I just don’t get how/why Tony would get himself into a close combat scenario like that in the first place when his strengths lie more with ranged attacks.

I’m not sure that it is. Has there been any actual confirmation on this from Marvel? AFAIK, the original story about the Director’s cut broke when Amazon posted up their pre-order info regarding the upcoming blu-ray release. They’ve since sent out an email backtracking on this, so who knows?
