That's interesting because when this happened to me, my direct supervisor didn't know about the mass layoff. We were in the middle of reviewing some work and I was called into HR. Then the awkward silence from all the employees in the office who knew what happened, some can't even look at you in the eye.

That is very good advice. Think twice before going into HR complaining of someone and hostile work environment because it's mostly going to be you who will get canned.
