Note: this doesn't work on Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger). On Tiger, doing Ctrl-Shift or Option-Shift adjusts the volume without the pop noise, but the increment remains the same.

@Unionhawk: I'm part of the Firefox community, and we definitely won't release an application that queries Mozilla's servers, then sends you a screenshot. First of all, Mozilla ITs would kill us.
