My sibling is in prison, and I can confirm that they do not. They feel pressured to do it because of improving their chances of parole, but with the (literally) $.20/hr they make, they’re better off begging their families for commissary money than breaking their backs to earn it.

If we are truly focused on giving them an opportunity to earn money while in prison, we’d pay them a fair wage.

THIS. Scalia n’ friends have made it almost impossible for prisoners to bring 8th Amendment claims about conditions of confinement. If the conditions are abhorrent, you’re SOL.

Why shouldn’t they be paid fair wages? Despite their lack of freedom, prisoners definitely benefit from wages, as their conditions of confinement are drastically improved when they have access to items which bring them the comfort of home from the comissary.
