The lore can go anywhere they want, but the problem is Halo was always designed as a “kinetic” shooter, i.e. a lot of jumps, strafes, shoot, and close to melee. Cover use is minimal, only when you got shields down. Turning it into a more standard shooter with cover lost the soul of the series.
