More than likely it was Alonso who said: “Look, I want to run Indy. Either you let me run Indy this year, or I walk.” And probably they realized no top name wants to race in a McLaren Honda in F1 and rather than paying hundreds of thousands or millions, they just gave him a race off to do Indy.
