Comtext matters. Nobody goes to the temple of Bel today and performs child sacrifices, or fondly remembers the days when people could. It’s also a significant archaeological site, not a modern and cheaply made monument whose sole purpose is to inspire fear in children and pride in sacrificial cultists.

Most of these statues were put in place well after the civil war, during the Jim Crow era. Many were erected during the 20th century, and were there to praise the treason of the confederacy, as well as remind African decedents that they were once treated as property.
