The logo, name, and uniforms were fun. The team was the definition of mediocrity on and off the ice. They had an “Adams Division Playoff Champion” banner, for god’s sake.

Keep in mind that the Winnipeg group was led by a billionaire they wanted into the club. Same with the Tampa and Buffalo sales.

That’s part of why an expansion fee is so huge: They just want straight cash. In 1990 Japanese shell corporations (Tampa Bay Lightning) and a ridiculously stupid real estate development…

Proximity to Chicago probably killed it in the early expansion eras. In the later ones the only real criteria was who could pay the expansion fee up front.

The loser point guarantees a playoff race. It’s stupid but is never going anywhere.

I really hate to say it, but if (big if) they get 4 jumpers at that expansion fee, they’ll probably take all 4.
