It sort of seemed to me as though the needless complexity and clunkiness were the goal, not just a by-product.

Kind of sad that we don't have any more modern research aircraft and have to rely on the U-2, from 1955... Still a cool plane anyway.

U-2 type aircraft usually have little stabilizer wheels that deploy from the wingtips. I don't know why they aren't down in the video.
