I’m not Asian, but I watched Mulan when I was in my early 20th, so I agree with most of your takes. Villains are visible darker than main heroes, pacing is really weird, and a dragon sidekick is annoying because of it. And most songs are forgettable. I liked Reflection, even if people agree it’s not really best Disney

“I’ll Make a Man Out of You” is objectively awful. It’s easily one of the worst songs ever included in any Disney movie.

I LOVE this show, for all the reasons listed above. My favorite is how little research most of these women have done on their new “home” countries and how they assume that society/their significant other will grow to accept their American tendencies. You can’t make the rest of the world accept your ‘Merican-ness!

I watched this last night. It’s weird, it’s funny, it’s so very 2020. I loved it. I laughed so much. My husband and I yelled at the contestants to do smarter things and make better choices and also admitted that neither of us had the upper body strength to go on the show.

I totally agree. Using Howard Stern as an example (and I understand that there are many who don’t forgive him or outright dislike/hate him), Howard consistently has talked about going through his divorce and therapy that helped him finally truly reckon with what a shitty person he was. I suspect Jimmy Kimmel has had a

I think Jezebel authors are contractually mandated to be snarky shitheads whenever they enter the comments of their own articles. I mean that.

Yeah, this is exactly the point. If Kimmel was saying “I was an idiot, I was doing a show based on what my Neanderthal friends and I thought was funny and we hurt a lot of people with it” that would be one thing. But it was absolutely NOT satire. It was about wearing the label of misogyny with pride. Good for him if

Adam Corolla and Dr. Drew and the worst.  Both conservative a-holes.

That’s a fair assessment. Personally, every white guy I encounter is an ignorant Man Show frat boy until proven otherwise.

The reason why I feel strongly about the topic is that I believe that our most effective tool against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc is education.

Jimmy Kimmel is a perfect example. L

I don’t see how advocating for healthcare once it became personal to him and his family does fuckall to atone for the misogyny he championed, televised and profitted from and which he continues to refuse to discuss in any meaningful way.

Now playing

Hazel, I wish you hadn’t touched this topic. I know the Kimmel thing keeps getting tossed around on Jez, and if you had read the comments on those prior pieces you wouldn’t be looking this foolish.

Everybody knows that Kimmel was that guy. Corolla is still that guy. The difference (and one that should make all of us

There are many shows, cited in this story, that draw attention to amazing world cuisines and the people behind them. The specific focus of this series is the specific foods that have crossed over to ‘American mainstream’ acceptance and are readily available in strip malls, food courts, etc. - in a form that is almost

yeah, I agree with this read of the situation. Like you could get to the end of this Jezebel piece and feel reasonably sure she grew up dirt poor, even though there’s nothing to really indicate that. Like... she was working for Joe Biden very early on in her career. This isn’t a normal sign of being held back.

I don’t disagree that class is an issue. I don’t disagree that there are no perfect victims. I don’t even disagree that she has lived a hard and sad life.

Absolutely!

The internet makes it easier than ever to track and bother your local politicians.

There is more to policy making than acting out slogans. Demilitarize the police, yes. De-arm the police, yes. Reconstruct policing as community service, yes. But pushing disbandment without a plan is insane. There has to be a replacement l. If the plan is to replace with community volunteers, they need large education
