This season looked like it’s been setting up Angelville until it swerved away from it this last episode. I’m enjoying the show for what it is, I guess, but it’s completely its own thing at this point and has only the most tenuous connection to the comics.

I thought it held up fine - they seemed to play fair there, with there usually being a second level to the conversation you;d pick up on rewatch.
The Good Place had the best first season of any comedy since at least Arrested Development, maybe ever.
