I’ve also had a conversation with two pilots during a sailing class about how there is a strong overlap between interest in aviation and sailing. And I don’t think I’ve ever met a watch buff who wasn’t also into cars, bikes, boats, and/or aircraft.

If you mean fission, then the US’s method of disposing of nuclear waste is, largely, “just bury it in big steel drums - what could possibly go wrong?” - and, before that, to dump it in the ocean.
