did you not read my comment?? obviously the carrier is subsidizing the phone in exchange for you signing a contract, but assuming you stay on the contract (and unlock to travel temporarily overseas) or pay the ETF then they are getting their money back.

I don't understand why it matters whether you are under contract or not. if you are under contract you either have to keep paying the bills or pay the ETF. either way the carrier is getting the money they require for subsidizing the phone.
