Compare it to cocking a pistol. Just because you cock it, doesn’t mean you tried to shoot anyone, you just prepared to. Luke prepared to kill Ben by lighting the saber, then considered it, then Ben woke up and interrupted him. Seemed to me like he was going to back off until Ben woke up and reached for his saber.
