He has a well-known reputation for being, essentially, a cheapskate. The Atlanta episode about “Kirkwood Chocolate” is based on Tyler Perry. He uploaded a video to social media where he showed off stacks of TV scripts he’d written by himself and proclaimed, “Work ethic!” (hence the title of the Atlanta episode), and

don’t listen to these hate mongers and enjoy the show.

one of its joys is its constantly expressive faces that help give character beats and reactions even if they’re simply listening. It’s something perfectly natural in animation that live action rarely duplicates

Anyone who has ever worked for Tyler Perry could have seen this coming from miles away.

I know what effortless means. I thought the writer’s point was conveyed very clearly with the sentence “The operative word is tries.” It’s like the first sentence subverted the expectation of where the paragraph was going, and then the sentence “unfortunately, the effort shows” subverted expectations again. Especially

The defense also noted OSHA reports that pinned the blame on producers and highlighted the stories of crew members leaving Rust because of safety concerns, intending to show that there were problems on the set that could not possibly be blamed solely on Gutierrez-Reed.

Because they were framing a shot where Baldwin’s character aimed the gun at/past the camera.

Fair

I feel like it’s contextual. For example, I don’t the people who said that it seemed like the filmmakers put in no effort to make Madame Web a good movie aren’t giving it a compliment. Calling something “effortless” does seem like a compliment. From the sentence I quoted, I couldn’t really tell. Just my two cents.

To be fair, the book Dune is based on was around before Beetlejuice.

The only reason they exist is an opportunity to make money. It’s not any deeper than that. I’ve seen some people online insist that it’s an opportunity for the story to reach a wider audience, but from the perspective of the people making it, a wider audience just means more $$$.

The show also tries to hew closer to the vibe of the original with its colorful costumes and production design, gravity-defying action sequences, and sense of humor and wonder. The operative word here is tries because, unfortunately, the effort shows.

I agree that it’s probably a corporate decision, but like I said, casual readers likely won’t be aware or make the distinction on their own. It’s moot anyway; I scrolled back up and saw that Zack used plenty of singular pronouns (I, my, etc.) so I’m embarrassed to admit the thing I called out isn’t even applicable to

[Closing paragraphs] are for high school essays?

I never said I watched Prisoners.

Yah, but I’m guessing they didn’t publish that first chunk of the book by itself. If it had been a mini series, the first movie would have been two or three, maybe even four episodes, and the audience would only have to wait a week for the next installment. It’s a tall order to ask audiences to wait two and a half

I’d rather see a talented actor like Shohreh Aghdashloo in a role than yet another overexposed actor that’s been in like a million things in the past two years.

Watching a Villeneuve movie makes me think of how people accuse Christopher Nolan’s movies of being “cold” and “emotionless.”

Same. I didn’t grow up with the book or the Lynch movie, but I’m generally a fan of the director’s work. I left Dune cold. It sounds like fans of the material got what they wanted from it, but I didn’t like how it just ends. It very much felt like half a movie.

I like how it just ends abruptly.
