Seasons 2 & 3 both address that Coulson is making mistakes, especially killing Ward the way he did—that one carried through the entire second half of season 3 without absolving him of blame.
And the teaser for next week hinted that the Ghost Rider might not find Coulson as innocent as he found Daisy.

Ward got a second chance. He blew it.
