Many fruits and veggies are fertilized with animal manure, which is a huge factor in e.coli contamination. You don't have to have meat in your house to get veg contaminated with e.coli - it may come into your house that way.
Cross-contamination can happen at any point before it gets to the store, from wildlife defecating in that field to runoff from rains to food processing equipment. And of course you know what fertilizer is? Sprouts are notorious for being the highest risk but outbreaks have been traced to everything from bagged salads…
Not true. The big e coli news stories of the past couple years have been from produce contaminated by fecal matter at the location they were picked/ processed at, not cross contamination.
