I really don’t think saving Ellie is supposed to be a “fucked up terrible thing”. In fact that’s one of the only really good things he did in the whole game. It’s his redemption.

All we can say for sure is that if the fireflies were being honest Ellie would’ve sacrificed herself and left Joel behind while Joel wouldn’t be able to carry on if that happened and wouldn’t let Ellie go through with it.

Developers have already confirmed that Ellie’s death would have saved everyone from the plague. People try to downplay that aspect so that the selfish answer is the only correct answer. But it is not. Thousands of “Ellies” will die because of what Joel did. Humanity will suffer a lot.

She’s not simply killing herself because of poor mental health but seeing her own life as a necessary sacrifice to bring some good back to the world for many others.

Oh yeah, in those trailers for TLOU2, she looks like she’s having SO MUCH FUN. Gosh, Joel really did help her see the bright side of life.

People self-sacrifice all the time, making themselves miserable in some way because of some greater goal. It’s what drives many public servants to do the jobs they do.
