Honestly I think it would have felt like more of a real threat if V2 was trying to kill his mother, you KNOW they aren't going to kill off Sarah. Killing mom would have given Linda Hamilton a way off the show like they did to Scott Bakula (assuming they aren't going to keep her on as a recurring character anyway).
