Counter counterpoint: well executed schmaltz is just as worthy of praise as any other type of movie.

Keala Settle, who plays the Bearded Lady, was singled out by Jackman (not that he has a whole lot of objectivity) as a scene-stealer during the film's presentation at Cinemacon. Apparently she beat out a number of well known actresses for the role.

Could also be a trial run for a 2020 primary effort. He took a shot against Trump in his exit interview, after all.

I love the first two Conjuring movies, but it'll be tough to find a director with a comparable control of tone and technical prowess as James Wan to take over. Scott Derrickson could, but he's busy Marvelling at the moment. Maybe Andrés Muschietti?

The bloated backstory aside, I liked "The Accountant" and thought Affleck and Gavin O'Connor did a good job of portraying the character's autism in a sensitive and thoughtful way that didn't manage to overwhelm the other aspects of his personality. So I'm okay with a sequel, provided they find something interesting

There's a difference between an inspired improvisation in the moment and trying to build most of a movie out of improvisation.

"this thing they said speaks directly to a major flaw in the movie!"
"That thing they said wasn't true"
"It wasn't meant to be taken seriously, GEEZ!"

The idea of a PG-13 'Power Rangers' gives off a different vibe than a PG-13 'Star Wars''.

There's (rightfully) a whole lot of talk about whether or not Peter Dinklage is appropriately cast in the title role, but let's look at his co-star for a second.

As the whitest guy on the planet it's probably not my place to bring up this subject, but I've seen some discussions on Black Twitter suggesting Chadwick Boseman, brilliant though he may be, is miscast as Thurgood Marshall due to his dark skin. Similar accusations were made against Denzel Washington in "Malcolm X",

On the press tour for "Get On Up" he said he was a bit leery of playing too many icons even after just starring in "42", but given that he signed on to this soon after and is also personally developing a film about the Reverend Jeffrey Brown, it seems he thinks he's found a nice niche that he can work well in outside

Frankly, if CMT was their best shot at renewal it's probably because Fox had already turned the show down.

Okay I love Ian McShane as much as anybody, but I recently learned that the role of Wednesday was offered to Nicolas fucking Cage. He turned it down, but as an unapologetic devotee I'd have LOVED to see his audition tape. He's such a dynamic actor that he'd perfectly fit into a Bryan Fuller universe.

Anne Coulter tweeted that Russia will soon be the only country left that's "recognizably European" (white).

Putin isn't Russia any more than Trump is the United States. Not to say he doesn't have support over there, but like Trump is, he's mostly representative of an ugly portion of the population that is okay or supportive of his policies as long as they benefit them (or harm others more).

Specifically about dialogue, I'm reminded of something Roger Ebert wrote: "Of course people in movies don't speak like they do in real life. If they did, it'd drive us nuts."

That's one of the (many) reasons why "The Lone Ranger" was such a mess-there was no tonal or aesthetic consistency from scene to scene. It's a gritty and surprisingly violent Western in its early scenes but by the end Tonto is literally jumping into a moving train car filled with silver ore and getting right back up

When even your attempt at Broadway legitimacy winds up being a disaster, you'd think an actor would take a good, long look at his career path.

Crooked Man wasn't CGI. He was played by Javier Botet, a 6'7", 100-pound actor who specializes in creature roles. The reason his movements look so jerky is because he performed the entire scene backwards with the footage shot in slo-mo, which was then reversed and sped up to normal speed.

The Crooked Man's scene was one of the most admirably messed up sequences from "The Conjuring 2", but I do agree it's odd to build spin-offs around characters that were supposed to be manifestations of the demon who was defeated at the end of that movie. Annabelle at least was its own thing.
