Despite the glitzier setting, Magnum had some sharp writing and great characters. Maybe a tad more melodramatic than Rockford. Netflix finally added Magnum PI's "Did ou See the Sun Rise" episode. A good place to start.

If you watch the pilot carefully, you'll notice that they go in a bodega for a drink, put money on the counter and say thanks to an unseen person at the register. It's a pretty safe bet that they just wanted to save money on extras.
