Well, I'd use one of those generic hidden-item games for small kids but the thing about Machinarium is that when you reach the (infamous) Boiler Room its puzzles suddenly ramp up the difficulty. Most people give up after this stage.

Edit: On a related point: Machinarium is THE go-to game you use when you want to introduce an elder non-gaming relative to computer games.
