“Airlines have so monetized every seat, and flights are so full, that this advice really is pretty outdated” this is so true. if you want a better seat just get off your wallet and pay for it. if that’s a problem either accept what they give you or don’t fly.

I am in my 50's now and have been alone since my early 20's. For some people it is simply not meant to be. After enough rejection you learn to stop trying and accept your fate. I have a really good job and I am grateful for what I am allowed to have, but a relationship is not in the universe’s plan for me.
