5800 sq ft lot is huge. Quick search and it’s 5' side and 25' front and back setbacks in this specific county. That gives you roughly a 1775 sq ft 1 story home, a 2 story gives you a 3550 ± sq ft.

In Santa Clara County, you are not able to do this. Many counties in the bay area had to change laws because of exactly what you are talking about. (example taking a 1k sq ft house and adding 4k sq ft.)
