Nintendo (very begrudgingly) gets that pass because of the high quality of their games. Squarenix is still banking on nostalgia to sell its titles, something that is in full effect for 7 remake.

I don’t think every part of what happens in FFVII after Midgar needs this much attention. Like Kalm is a completely pointless town.

This came about because they looked at FFVII and realized that just slapping a new coat of paint on it would be like trying to shine a turd.

FFVII is really deficient and would be terrible if just remade as it was with better graphics.

Midgar isn’t 1/20 of FFVII. It’s closer to 1/3 of FFVII
