I think my first P2P program was Kazaa++ or something, then I moved to Ares, Bearshare, and finally LimeWire. It was always a bit bulkier, but it had lots of results.

Dedicated Apps have the main advantage of downloading and storing files locally (such as email). They also seem much faster than browser versions.
