Ah, yup - agree with that then. Way too many adults that start out seeking a rigorous degree (like engineering or a medical-themed subject) get knocked over by basic prerequisites like algebra, stat, or chemistry, then downshift in communications or some other fuzzy-wuzzy degree.

"most of them can only get some of the softer degrees like english, instead of [one] that will immediately impact their life..."

Walters was a true cultural titan at one time — the first woman to anchor an evening news show, for example, back when anchors were media gods. She even made 5x the salary of her male co-anchor, which cause a major kerfuffle.

.... or by challenging her friend's assumption that they were doing something wrong, right?

I doubt they're racing to clarify what they intend to do with the money.

a) You were responding to a comment about "our army overseas," which dealt not at all with this specific incident involving a Navy submarine.

I'm not totally sure your sergeant's behavior amounts to a specific, tidy indictment of a "straight/white/whatever" mentality — assuming such a thing definitely exists — but it was entertaining as hell to read about. It definitely works as a sketch of one man's doomed attempt to outrun his inner appetites.

"Straight white guys"?

I don't think comparing times at 40 meters with times at 40 yards can tell us much either.

Duly noted. I admire your ability to quantify dehumanization with such exacting precision. Fun little tidbit from California's constitution (of 1879):

See p. 2 of the DOJ report that Anna references. It would appear that both behaviors qualify as "sexual assault" under some standard definitions:

The poster provided — in her last sentence — six forms of oppression faced by blacks. The implication can only be that Chinese immigrants in the West weren't subjected to similar tools of control/marginalization.

Could there be a better visual metaphor for Anna's coverage of the UVA story?

If my math is correct, the new DOJ study implies a 2.5% chance of rape/sexual assault (for women), or the threat of rape/sexual assault, over a four-year span in college.

From the DOJ study cited above:

I'm sure your reliance on elementary-school history books serves you well.

Thanks for the nifty collection of trite-yet-sweeping generalities. If I ever get drafted into a debate with a conservative fourth-grader, it'll come in real handy.

Mmmm.... and how do you have the conversation with Asians (who, of course, are heavily under-represented relative to whites in all forms of juvenile detention/punishment)?

Depends whether or not they're NFL-caliber athletes. If they are, they also get special treatment — their draft status doesn't even take that big a hit, and at least one study suggests they deliver excellent relative value to their teams.

"systemic habit of criminalizing young black boys specifically, and black, latino and asian children in general."
