Maybe the synthesis here is that we - as a society - are fairly good at looking past "good" qualifications to discern unreliability (as with many Congressmen), but biased to assume unreliability in cases of "bad" qualifications (as with less sympathetic victims). It's not a symmetric thing, iow.

It's far from clear that "hegemonic cred" automatically accrues to that set of qualifications, surely? It's the exact descriptor for about 80% of the members of US Congress... who consistently rank rock-bottom for credibility and trustworthiness, just to take one obvious counter-example.
