Maryland is definitely not New England. It’s mid-Atlantic. But if you divide the east coast into north and south it’s the most northern southern state. The state name is the Old Line State. It was the last slave state going north.

It was definitely more mixed sides than solidly anti-confederate. I don’t understand why it’s confusing that the Old Line State that had a good portion of its people fighting for the confederates would have confederate statues. And obviously the justice the article refers to was from Maryland

It’s more complicated than that as a good portion of Maryland soldiers fought for the confederacy. It’s not so surprising that the Old Line State would honor confederate soldiers. And that justice who “defended slaves” (should say “defended slavery”) was indeed from Maryland
