What I don't understand is how a company that makes most of its money on a MMORPG could have screwed up their servers for a new release like this. They should have server side issues completely taken care of.

Like minusX says, if a company doesn't attempt to protect its copyright they can lose it. So if they let an infringing use go, even on something like this where he's not making any money on it, they could lose their ability to sue someone who is making money on the back of their copyrighted material.

Except they already took a stab at that by trying out a new DC hero franchise and it sucked. They've shown that they don't know what to do with anybody other than Batman and Superman, and they managed to mess up Superman in his last outing, too.
