@Charlie Jane Anders: Yup they have free will and they chose to do all that they did. Sounds like you have a problem with the idea of predestination, self fulfilling prophesy and having you choices/path all ready laid out for you rather than it being a narrative issue. I can't get all psychoanalytical but I digress.
