Were the purplish lights visible in person or are they some sort of IR LEDs that were picked up on the digital camera?

When I was younger occasionally I would get a ride from my dad to school in our early 90's Cavalier. Sometimes the passenger door would jam and I would have to hold the outside door handle up and manually open the latch with my finger before it would shut correctly...
