I dont think emulators are illegal in the US, I think they are in Japan though.

Emulator developers don’t rely on people using their software because they’re not making money off it. What are you even talking about?

Game system emulators aren’t illegal, as has been proven in court multiple times. Using copyrighted code (be it bios, firmware, or ROMs), on the other hand, is.

At that point, the legal precedent was extremely clear, and I don’t believe there has been another lawsuit or legal battle involving the legality of a clean-room…

MAME is GPL2+, which allows commercial use without royalties. The main goal of the GPL, as a copyleft license, is ensuring that changes made to the code are also released - but a product like this likely wouldn’t have made any changes to the MAME parts. So they are probably in the clear on that front.

With your off topic, yeah that thing is really ugly looking and for over $200 USD I expect a lot more games for it.  I just hope the build quality is awesome for something that costs almost as much as a basic ps4 or Switch.

I recall some of the programming in FBAlpha is from MAME. Harris would not have the rights to violate the terms to that part of it.

Yeah, this whole thing kinda smells funny. I heard about it from this video earlier and I can understand while people in the emulation community would have such a problem with both Capcom using FBAlpha and Mr. Harris signing off on it’s use.
